Reading Year in Review - 2013 Edition

Alcott: turned
Last New Year's Eve, I made a resolution to read one-hundred books in 2013. I didn't quite realize what I was getting myself into, as this goal amounts to about two books a week, and I have simply not committed that much time to reading since before I was in high school and real life got between me and the collective imagination of great story tellers. However, with some furious calculating and time management, I finally put a good dent in that endless to-be-read pile of mine that often threatens to collapse and give someone a concussion.

So, here's the year of one-hundred books, along with a few random thoughts that hopefully resemble reviews and a list of my favorite books I read this year.

If you want to ask if I think you'll enjoy a certain book, feel free.

Book Cover Weakness

QT: Attolia
So, I was recently scrolling through my Goodreads lists, doing a little New Years cyberspace housekeeping, when I noticed a recurring theme in the book covers on both my favorites shelf (202 and counting) and my to-read shelf (329 and counting). Particularly in regards to books I'd decided were omg-I've-gotta-read-that material even before I'd read the summary.

She Gave More Than I, A Squire's Tales Fanfic

QT: Attolia
Title: She Gave More Than I

Author: ninedaysaqueen

Beta: openedlocket

Disclaimer: I claim no ownership of The Squire's Tales series. All rights and recreant knights belong to Gerald Morris and his respective publishers.

Spoilers: Books 1-2

Rating: PG/K+

Genre: Drama/Romance/Angst/Pre-canon

Word Count: 1,300

Summary: “Your face is the face of a faery, my son. But your selfless heart is the gift of your mother. As always, she has given more than I.” - From The Squire, His Knight, and His Lady

Author's Notes: We learn very little about Terence's mother in canon, and I've always been curious about the human girl who so enchanted Ganscotter. She's described in the books as being a gentle peasant girl from Yorkshire, but in the tradition of Morris's canon female characters, I aimed to make her just a little bit tougher and more independent than the term gentle might encompass. However, I hope you still enjoy my interpretation. :)

Apologizes for any historical inaccuracies that may or may not be deliberate. Since ST is obviously not a historical series, I went more for simply entertaining than factually precise.

Also, fair warning, this one's a tear-jerker, folks.

Enjoy!

Last sunday's episode of Leverage, The Radio Job, nearly gave me a heart attack. Not to mention a much loved fangirlish Doctor Who reference. Ah, John Rogers... "Let's go steal a time machine!"

Note--1962 is the year just before the original Doctor Who series premiered. And yes, that is the original theme song playing in the background.
